Than is a versatile word that is commonly used in English to make comparisons between two or more things. It is often used to express a difference in degree, preference, or quantity. In this article, we will explore various tips and examples on how to effectively use the word "than" in sentences.

1. Comparative Statements: One of the primary uses of "than" is to compare two things or people. When using "than" in a sentence, it is important to remember that it should be followed by a noun, pronoun, or a verb in the base form. For example: - "She is taller than her brother." - "I prefer tea rather than coffee." - "He runs faster than anyone in the race."

2. Expressing Preferences: "Than" can also be used to express a preference or choice between two options. In such cases, it is often used after adjectives or adverbs. Here are a few examples: - "I would rather go to the beach than stay at home." - "She would rather eat pizza than sushi." - "He would rather sleep late than wake up early."

3. Quantity Comparisons: When comparing quantities or numbers, "than" is commonly used to indicate a difference. It is often used after comparative adjectives or adverbs. Consider the following examples: - "The second book is longer than the first one." - "She has fewer friends than her sister." - "He earns more money than his colleagues."

4. Idiomatic Expressions: "Than" is also used in various idiomatic expressions that have become part of everyday language. Here are a few examples: - "Better late than never" (It is better to do something late than not at all). - "More haste, less speed" (If you rush, you are more likely to make mistakes and take longer). - "Easier said than done" (It is easier to talk about something than to actually do it).

5. Avoiding Double Comparisons: One common mistake to avoid when using "than" is the double comparison. This occurs when both "more" and "than" are used together, which is unnecessary. For example: - Incorrect: "She is more taller than her sister." - Correct: "She is taller than her sister."

6. Using "Other" with "Than": When comparing one thing to a group or category, it is common to use the word "other" before "than." This helps to clarify that the comparison is being made within a specific set. For example: - "She is more talented than any other singer in the competition." - "This car is faster than any other car on the market."

In conclusion, the word "than" is a powerful tool for making comparisons in English. By following these tips and examples, you can effectively use "than" in your sentences to express differences in degree, preference, or quantity. Remember to pay attention to the structure of your sentence and ensure that "than" is used correctly to convey your intended meaning.
